The rising tide creates a great deal of motion and uneasiness in this dramatic image of the Imperial Beach Pier, taken at dusk on a cloudy, colorless day. A number of elements came together to create this spectacular moment: A particularly strong, rising tide, combined with heavy cloud cover, simultaneously gives the impression of being both closed-in yet nearly infinite in space and distance.
